These will have varying degrees of oxidation, which can be addressed by soaking in bore cleaner or another solvent, then scrubbing with a gun brush - use the tiny brush to get into the channels where the cartridge rims ride. Rinse and wipe dry, then wipe with an oily rag. Check the ears at either end if the ammo is too loose in the clip, but don't gorilla them or they might break.

I don't know how they were loaded at the factory during the war, but they work best if you load the clips as you'd load the magazine manually - each round's rim in front of the previous rim. Then you have to glance at the orientation of the clip before you insert it into the rifle or the stack will be upside down and you could have a jam on feeding.

I saw on some site a suggestion that the rounds were put into the clip ALTERNATING the rims - one forward, the next behind, the next forward, etc - but I don't see how that helps once the first round has been fired.
